this is "today in the bay." it is 4:31. good tuesday morning, everybody. i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. lots to get to this morning. let's first check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> hey, good morning. it is the talk of the town, the heat wave in october. now, temperatures today are going to be just about as warm as they were yesterday, but we are talking about almost 100 degrees in santa cruz yesterday, so temperatures are going to be hot yet again today. san francisco hit 90. livermore hit 102 degrees. as we head throughout the day today, just about as hot. and we've got one more day of heat to get through before it breaks. we'll break it all down for you coming up in your full forecast. first let's check out the roads with mike. >> we'll take you to the bay bridge toll plaza with an easy light volume of traffic.

you can clearly see the east shore freeway. there's typical overnight construction and that's what's going on overnight so far. the bay bridge itself, also 880 at the bottom of your screen coming up north of 23rd and right here, west 24 we see a little slowing past old tunnel road. typical construction around the caldecott but no major issues. first the arrest, now the death of a popular east bay teacher left the albany middle school community simply stunned. this morning counselors meeting with students and the school board will give more details to parents about the teacher arrested for molesting a student. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. flowers and candles and notes are sitting in front of albany middle school this morning which has gone through two horrible incidents in just a middle of days. first accusations of molestation and now the death of popular teacher and coach james

izumizaki. the alameda county sheriff says a family member found him dead in a car yesterday near the hayward airport. just 28 years old. his death is being investigated as a suicide. last week police arrested him after he was accused of lewd acts on a former student. parents got a call last night about his death and word spread on social media. one parent told us as awful as this all is, kids really need to hear the truth. >> you can either make or break a kid in middle school. hopefully this doesn't do any damage to any of the kids. >> reporter: now, the d.a. did not file any charges against him because police were still investigating. albany police will have to decide the future of this case. many say that they will tell the students and athletes who worked with izumizaki to go ahead and

work and compete in his honor. the superintendent holding a press conference at 8:30 this morning here in albany. christie smith, "today in the bay." 4:34. a search will continue for a fisherman still missing after the boat he was in capsized sunday near half moon bay. he was with three others at the time. two of the men survived and swam to shore to get help. the body of the other missing man was found yesterday afternoon by his family. the two men who survived were wearing life jackets. the cleanup continues in the central valley this morning after two train crashes happened just miles apart. the first involving an amtrak train traveling from oakland to bakersfield. that train derailed near hanford about 30 miles south of fresno. less than four hours later 17 miles away a freight train and tractor-trailer collided. crews working through the night repairing those tracks. the 169-passenger train derailed

after colliding with the big rig. that driver was injured as well as almost two dozen people on the train. >> i got this force on the side of my head and my arm and it knocked he sideways to my left. and i'm covered in dirt and insulation and it was just -- you couldn't see anything. >> a wild scene there. an amtrak spokesperson says the truck's driver pushed through the crossing bars and right into the train. she said the flashing lights and bells were working at the time. 4:35. this morning fire investigators in santa rosa busy trying to determine if an arsonist is to blame for three suspicious fires. they happened at two churches and a railroad engineering firm. all three fires were started by a molotov cocktail. the damage was minor, no one was hurt. a major warning and massive recall for peanut butter brands is expanding.

sunland is adding more store pra brand names to a recall list. they provide peanut butter and other products to major chains. some of the stores include target archer farms, safeway open nature and fsh and & easy. also nature valley, earthbalance and serious food. the recall first began after people started getting sick after eating trader joe's brand peanut butter. centers for disease control and prevention says there are 30 cases of salmonella illnesses across 19 different states. the man accused of walking into a peninsula elementary school campus and abducting a 9-year-old student is expected in court today. 25-year-old bradley mrozek could toor answer to charges this afternoon. he walked into parkside elementary and grabbed a young

student from a bathroom. she managed to get free and ran to tell school administrators. one of the strictest smoking pans in the bay area is now officially in effect. san rafael officials voting on the new ordinance last night. not only does it ban smoking in apartments and condos, it bans them in other outdoor spaces. some outdoor smoking spaces will be legal, 100 feet away from children's playgrounds and swimming pools. enforcement -- the county health and human services will handle reports for first-time violations. one bay area city says it may do away with weekly garbage collection. the city is working on a way to keep organic waste out of landfills. if homeowners sorted their food scraps and the like there would be less trash and less need for trash pickup. palo alto is trying to implement

a sorting program. tonight the city finance committee is to look into getting garbage collection once or twice monthly. 4:38. check back in christina loren. it's just going to keep getting warmer and warmer. >> if you had to take the trash out, right now might be the time to do so. we have a really hot day ahead. a live picture, beautiful clear shot over san francisco this morning. you can tell if it's this clear to start, no low clouds to cool us off. it's going to be another scorcher as we kick off the second tuesday of fall. gilroy yesterday hit 103 degrees. 102 in walnut creek. livermore hit 100 degrees. 96 in south san jose and san francisco 90 degrees. it was really hot. monterey to santa cruz, up and down the coast got close to the triple digits so we'll see another hot day today. make sure you're ready for it.

if you're getting your kids ready to school, dress them in the late colors of the day. 60s in san jose. livermore, concord and fairfield will be the hot spot. the tri-valley, look at this, i wanted to go a little bit more granular an show you pleasanton at 76 degrees to start. you're at 75 as you wakeup in walnut creek. you are getting a little bit of a bay influence here in oakland at 59 degrees but oakland hit 93 and will get close to it again today. air quality has improved. we have good air quality at the coast. the haze is clearing the bay area. throughout the day it's going to be just about as hot. i'm taking your temperatures down by a couple of degrees in the east bay and boosted them up in places like san rafael. what happens is when you get this offshore flow, it negates the marine influence. 83 in san francisco, 101 in

gilroy. we've got another hot day tomorrow. we'll reveal that in your seven-day forecast. first let's see how the drive is shaping up with mike. >> you know, it's 4:40 so surprise, light traffic in san jose. let me show you a couple of things going on. we have your yellow and that's minor slowing. i don't want to alarm anyone looking at the maps. it's not a big deal. there is construction north 880 passing by the brokaw exit heading up towards montague and 237. the northbound side has a lot of construction on the side that's blocking your right lane, possibly your right two lanes. minor slowing through the area. another live look outside shows you as you're coming up along the area right here, fremont 880 both directions move smoothly. then across the bay we are also looking at the san mateo bridge, westbound 92 off the high rise, no problems, guys. back to you. we've been hearing some noise in the east bay because there's a big-time celebration going on. that's right, the a's were

underdogs but this morning ow g oakland heading straight to the playoffs. yeah, you can consider them one of the hottest teams in baseball and one of the most champagne-drenched right now. back in july the team was at the bottom of the standings but this morning they are close to the top. >> playoffs, baby, playoffs! >> we've got tickets for all the playoffs all the way up through the world series. so we're hoping to make it to the world series. >> out there feeling the magic and they should be. the a's haven't been to the postseason in six years. the last time they did it was 2006. they play the rangers tonight and tomorrow. well, new concern for the giants as they get ready for the playoffs. catcher buster posey pulled from last night's game with back spasms. skipper bruce bochy says it was a precaution and posey will be re-evaluated today. it is possible he'll play tonight against the dodgers but on first base.

4:45 right now. yahoo!'s ceo taking a little time off as she should to bond with her brand new baby. marissa mayer giving birth to a baby boy sunday night. both mom and baby are doing just fine, thank you very much. so far no name announced, but there are rumors she's been e-mailing her friends and family looking for a few suggestions. mayer took over yahoo! back in july and she says right now she'll take a few weeks off, working maternity leave. >> it is work out there for all you early morning risers. 4:45. parents are being warned about the possibility of a

worldwide diaper shortage. it all stems from a weekend explosion at a japanese chemical plant. the plant is actually the world's largest producer of acrylic acid and acrylic acid is the main ingredient in superan sore ent polymers which is the key in making those. the plant supplies the makers of huggies and pampers. plant officials would not comment on whether there could be a shortage. a small victory for samsung in its ongoing feud with apple and a first for google. seema mody has that and the rest of your news before the bell. she is live at cnbc world headquarters this morning. good morning, seema. >> reporter: very good morning to you. a lot of tech news but first take a look at the markets. futures higher after stocks closed mostly to the upside monday but well off their highs. investors reacted positively to data showing the u.s. manufacturing sector grew unexpectedly last month but that

was tempered by comments from fed chairman ben bernanke speaking about the fed's new stimulus measures. european markets are mixed this morning. the dow rising 78 points in yesterday's trade and the nasdaq slipping about two points to close at 3113. and google has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a tiny search engine. it's now passed microsoft to become the world's second most valuable tech company behind apple. google stock closed at an all-time high of $761 a share on monday. it's now the dominant force in online advertising with two-thirds of the u.s. search market. google's android powers 64% of all smartphones. a u.s. judge has lifted a pan on galaxy tablet. apple won the suit. the judge said it didn't infringe on any apple devices.

like the galaxy tab is an older model, it could boost samsung sales ahead of the holidays. something to watch out for. back to you. >> seema, thank you very much. certainly keeping our eye on the forecast. christina, you weren't kidding, it was hot yesterday. >> smokesmoker. >> hottest day of the year at the coast. >> isn't it something, it's october. >> if our weather was like that all the time, we wouldn't have those beautiful redwoods lining the ocean. it was really hot and all the animals, the livestock, the cattle, horses, that live by the beach, it was a tough day for them yesterday. we've got another tough day to get through and then we shave off about ten degrees tomorrow. we shave off another ten degrees as we head through your thursday and then by this weekend we're talking about 70s and showers, so dramatic changes on the way. today, though, we are expected to break numerous records yet again because temperatures are just about as hot. the bay bridge completely clear this morning. i wanted to start out by showing you some of the temperatures around the state because los

angeles actually hit 104 degrees at the coast yesterday. it was really hot out there. 71 to start in fresno. fresno was very hot. the central valley will be the hottest location across the state besides palm springs. if you're headed to southern california and driving, make sure you check the fluids in your vehicle before you head out. 65 in san francisco, 61 in san mateo, 59 in sunnyvale to start. we're at 64 to start in san jose. campbell 77, same for santa teresa. it's going to be another hot day. as we head throughout the next couple days, an area of low pressure moves in. this will usher in a stronger onshore flow and really improve our air quality heading into wednesday and thursday, but we've got one more hot one to get through. make sure you keep that in mind if you have pets, kids, you want to prepare them for the day ahead. lots of water for the pets and the kids will need light-colored clothing. they have to wait for the bus or teachers at recess and it's hot out there. cooler winds arrive wednesday. temperatures, though, hot again.

concord at 100 degrees, 97 in santa rosa, 88 in santa cruz. i'm telling you, if you have the day off hit the beach because it's spectacular out there. after all, we're in october now. the seven-day reveals those changes. 78 degrees, showers on sunday. when we meet back on monday, we're talking about 76 degrees, mild conditions. what's interesting, though, we've got a lot happening this weekend and the weather will cool off just in time for all the action. back to you. >> thank you, christina. turning now to decision 2012, president barack obama and republican presidential candidate mitt romney taking the day off from the campaign trail just to prepare for tomorrow's big showdown. the first of three debates will take place here in denver, as we take a live look this morning. both president obama and mitt romney running through full rehearsals to hone in those talking points. as of this morning president obama has a lead in all nine of the key battleground states. both campaigns say tomorrow will

right now you're looking live over san jose. a nice morning so far. we're waiting for the sun to come up. christina loren says brace yourself once again, the thermometer will be jumping so dress accordingly. it is 4:54. police at this hour searching for modern day gold rush thieves. investigators say $2 million worth of precious jemz were stolen last friday from the mining and minerals museum in mariposa.

the thieves threatened workers with pick axes during the heist but failed at grabbing the biggest prize of all, a 14-pound gold nugget. an alarm was triggered when they started touching it, causing this many to flee the scene. the two museum employees fortunately were not hurt. >> interesting. nhl labor talks set to resume this morning in new york. negotiations between the league and the players association expected to focus on revenue and player health and safety. the two sides have actually made some progress, but they have yet to agree on how to split more than $3 billion in league revenues between owners and players. the lockout is entering its third week and there are no meetings planned beyond today. the nhl is expected to announce it will postpone the start of regular season later this week. if you like planning ahead, way ahead, 49er fans can secure their spot in the new santa clara stadium, two years ahead of the first game. the niners have opened advance ticket sales to the general

public. existing season ticket holders had their first pick of the seats and from january through august they bought out over half of the stadium. the niners haven't said how many seats are still available. construction on the stadium started back in april. it is set to be finished in time for the kickoff of the 2014 season. >> that will be amazing to see. let's check the morning commute right now. it's early out there. mike. >> it is, i confirm that. looking over to oakland we're looking at a nice, easy, early drive for the nimitz freeway. a smooth drive through the construction zone approaching the bay bridge. let's get a look at the maps coming in from the other side approaching from the carquinez bridge. a smooth drive for west 80 as well as 680 southbound. north bay no slowing. the construction not a problem. no skprurconstruction factoring your commute. we'll catch up with these folks across the golden gate bridge
